Our Place
In the spirit of reconciliation, Eight at the Gate acknowledges the First Nations people of our region, the Bindjali people who are the traditional custodians of the land, and their spiritual relationship with this country.
Making Great Wine in a Great Region
Understandably, we are passionate about Wrattonbully wine country.
Wrattonbully is a premium appellation in Australia’s lauded Limestone Coast, growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay grapes, prized by many producers for inclusion in Australian premium multi-regional blends.
As Peter Gago, Penfolds Grange winemaker says, “The spoils of terra rossa soils, latitude and limestone are a magical mix”. We want to tell you about our patch so you can raise a glass to Wrattonbully’s attributes, hopefully with our single vineyard Wrattonbully wines, with their distinct colour, aroma, and flavour – the fruits of our labour.
At Eight at the Gate, we understand and respect our fruit, variety, vineyard, and place. And our customer.
Wine is best defined by what you find in your glass. Drinkable research is our favourite kind.
But it is rewarding to know the factors that create those characteristics – that particular roundness, spice or minerality – that capture you and tickle your fancy.
This touches on what the French call terroir – that evocative word describing how a site produces unique wine.
First Nations Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains talk of pangkarra – an Aboriginal word used by the concept of Country with its particular characteristics. So when you think terroir, we think pangkarra.
Wrattonbully Country, with a discernible sense of place, and a signature character reflecting the aggregated effects of the region’s soil, topography, hydrology, climate, geology, and environment.
Our family lives, breathes and sleeps the realities of Wrattonbully wine. So, let us tell you a bit more.

Where are we?
We are in southern Wrattonbully, in South Australia, midway on the inland route between Melbourne and Adelaide, on elevated tablelands, somewhat off the beaten track where we can focus on the business of growing premium wine grapes without distraction.
About the Region
No longer one of the wine industry’s best-kept secrets, the unique characteristics of Wrattonbully fruit are gaining worldwide attention as the region toasts a growing list of trophies, medals and international accolades.
